CAS National Council Re-established

12th January 2024

Happy New Year, everyone! It is with great pride that we announce again that our national council has been reformed after a lengthy period in abeyance, owing to the upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This is an exciting time for CAS, since we are active in more areas across schools and universities than we have ever been. Our outreach programme, in conjunction with Classics for All, is ongoing; we are advocating hard for Classics in the teacher training framework; our local branches go from strength to strength; and we are in the preliminary stages of reviving dormant national academic events such as a conference aimed at postgraduates across all universities offering Classics in Scotland (including the Open University).

Our newly reformed national council was agreed at our last AGM in the latter half of last year, and has been significantly expanded from its previous iterations, which were almost exclusively university faculty-based. Our new committee has representation from schools, universities and independents, and reflects our multifaceted mission for the challenges facing Classics in the twenty-first century. The line-up of council members can be found on the ‘About Us’ tab of this website.

As always, we want to hear from you. Do you have any thoughts about projects CAS could be pursuing to improve access to Classics across Scotland? Let us know by contacting anyone in our national leadership and take it from there. We may be the oldest classical subject association in the UK, but we aim to be one with a modern outlook and responsive organisation!
