Thanks to generous funding from the Royal Society of Edinburgh, there will be a one-day symposium at the University of Edinburgh on Tuesday 9 June on the theme of Classical Literature in the Renaissance. Talks will examine the afterlife of classical literature in the Early Modern period across a range of texts, including literary works by authors such as Petrarch and translations from Latin and Greek. Speakers will include Dr Stuart Gillespie (Glasgow), Prof. Sarah Knight (Leicester), Prof. Marianne Pade (Aarhus), and Prof. Leah Whittington (Harvard). The event will also include a round-table discussion featuring the speakers along with Prof. Emma Buckley (St Andrews), Dr Syrithe Pugh (Aberdeen), Prof. Jill Burke, Dr Richard Oosterhoff, and Dr Luke Houghton (Edinburgh), and there will be an opportunity to view a display of manuscripts, incunabula, and early printed texts in Edinburgh University Library.
The event will take place from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Meadows Lecture Theatre, Old Medical School (Doorway 4), Elsie Inglis Quadrangle, Teviot Place, Edinburgh. Attendance is free but registration in advance is requested: please contact Luke Houghton [[email protected]] by Monday 1 June 2026.
